Working as an Internet security specialist requires at least a bachelor’s degree in computer-related field; however, many businesses require a master’s degree in computer science or information technology (IT). Master’s degree programs in Internet security, also known as cybersecurity, have specific admission requirements that must be met before the student can enroll in the program. Distance learning or online education programs have become very popular in recent years because they allow students to earn degrees at their own pace. As an online student, you’ll have many of the same courses and even instructors that you’d have in an on-campus program. MS – Internet Security Program Length

Master degree programs take from two to three years to complete and generally require the student to earn a specific number of credits and complete a capstone project. Some programs require completion of as much as 36 credits and a project to demonstrate the student’s knowledge of Internet security. Coursework can include cyberspace and cybersecurity, digital forensics, cyber crime investigation and protection strategies in cybersecurity.

Keep an eye out for dual degree programs that allow students to earn the master’s in cybersecurity and a Master of Business Administration (MBA). This program can be very beneficial to individuals who wish to work in business in leadership capacities.

Limited Options for Specific Concentrations with Master’s in Internet Security

While some internet security programs may include areas of concentration, this is not real common. Internet or cybersecurity is more often found as a concentration in a computer science or information technology program. An online Master of Science in Information Technology with a concentration in information security and assurance, for example, could include courses in information security risk analysis, network security analysis and internet security.

Carnegie Mellon University

Carnegie Mellon University offers several on-campus master degree programs dealing with computer science and information technology. Their Master of Science in Computer Science program allows the student to work with a faculty member in designing a personalized program based on the student’s area of specialization such as networking, security, etc.

DePaul University

DePaul University offers a Master of Science in Computer, Information and Network Security with concentrations in the following areas: network security; computer security; and governance, risk management and compliance. While all dealing with Internet security, each one covers specific areas. Computer security deals with processes to ensure the security of the computer system and accessories whereas network security deals more with the security of the entire network and network infrastructure.

The governance concentration focuses on the security of the computer/network at an enterprise level and well as ensuring the system is in compliance. This program, which is available both on campus and online, requires students to complete a ten-week capstone course where they participate in a case study and demonstrate their ability to design and implement a secure network infrastructure using what they’ve learned in class.

Career Outlook for those with an Internet Security Master’s Degree

While bachelor’s degrees are generally the basic requirement for Internet security-related jobs, earning a master’s degree can put individuals in some of the best-paying positions.

Computer and information systems managers earned annual wages of about $ 161,730, according to a May 2020 U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report.
