Online Cyber Security Programs in Oklahoma

There are a few options for taking cybersecurity education online in Oklahoma, one of them being a truncated Graduate Certificate in Information Assurance at Oklahoma State University.

Offered by the Watson Graduate School of management, this 15-credit curriculum has one required course - The Upper Layers of Telecommunications Systems. After that, students will take four of six electives that are in the discipline, with topics like legal and ethical issues, IT forensics, and management within information assurance.

Taking an online course at Oklahoma State University is available around the world and utilizes the Canvas course management system. There are also online courses available within the Information Assurance concentration when pursuing the Master of Business Administration.

Master's in Cyber Security Degrees in Oklahoma

The University of Tulsa has a Master of Science in Cyber Security, and students have the ability to pick between a thesis and non-thesis course. Either option will require the completion of 30 credit hours, with the thesis track needing to pass an oral examination that showcases the results of the student's research. The non-thesis course will need to complete a project that is approved by the faculty.

Half of the curriculum will require cybersecurity electives, with course examples being Advanced Computer Security, Enterprise Security Management, and Critical Infrastructure Protection.

This program is geared toward working professionals, and even when continuing their career, they can complete the program within two years. Undergraduates can apply for an accelerated format and add just one more year to their curriculum

Getting Started Working in Cyber Security in Oklahoma

For those not interested in completing these programs online, they are available in Midwest City, Oklahoma City, San Antonio, Stillwater, and Tulsa.

• Undergraduate Degrees:
  The Oklahoma City Community College has an Associate in Applied Science in Computer Science with an emphasis in Cyber and Information Security. This program provides foundational cybersecurity skills, proficiency in Linux, Windows, Oracle, and SQL, and soft skills like communication. The program will take two years to complete and students will be prepared for the CompTIA A+ certification. All grades must be C or higher in the computer science category.

  Rose State College is another community college in Midwest City that offers an Associate in Applied Science for Cyber Security and Digital Forensics. Students can choose a specific path among those two fields, or take the Cyber Science option. Within the Cyber Security option, there are five total courses (15 credits), and three of them will need at least a B or higher grade – Information Security Management, Ethical Hacking and Systems Defense, and Enterprise Threat Assessment. The rest of the curriculum is reserved for general education in communications, US government, math, and finance. Another option is the Cyber Security certificate, which requires 42 total credit hours instead of the 63 total credits needed for the AAS.

• Masters and Continuing Education:
  The two options for Master’s degrees in the state that are designated as CAEs are at Oklahoma State University and the University of Tulsa. OSU’s curriculum within Information Assurance can be found as a concentration in many of their Master’s degrees, such as Business Administration, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Management and Information Systems, and Telecommunications Management. The University of Tulsa has a direct Master of Science in Cybersecurity.
• Cyber Security Employment Options:
  Oklahoma City has a number of opportunities for those just breaking into the cybersecurity field. The cybersecurity analyst at General Dynamics will have duties like identifying inconsistent and dangerous activity within a network, document and uncover trends when attacks occur to provide improvements to security in the future, and communicate with leadership and executive roles to recommend improvements.
